Community
The theme for the Spring 2022 Exhibit is “Community”.
What does community mean to you? Do we choose our communities or do they choose us? Is community all about a sense of belonging? Where we look to for support? Something that shapes parts of us? A movement for something greater than we are as individuals?
Community can be defined in many different ways.
Photographers are encouraged to consider how they or others experience community and to submit their best documentary images of their interpretation of the theme “Community”.

Why Submit?
Be a part of something great! Part of DFP’s mission is to provide a platform for artists and photographers to make new connections and reach the widest possible audience for their work. Exhibitions give photographers the chance to get their work in front of more people, to gain recognition from around the world, and to contribute their photographic voice as a means of communicating the importance of true family stories.
Selected photographers will have the opportunity to show their work in the collective virtual photo exhibit “Community”, with the possibility of a future traveling exhibit.
The selected works will be published in the exhibition’s catalogue as well as featured online and in press releases and publications. Selected works will also be considered for the Juror’s Choice Awards and the People’s Choice Awards.
In addition to this, you can opt to have your submission(s) reviewed by an industry mentor. The feedback you will receive will enable you to further your work and future exhibit and award submissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to be a DFP Directory Listed member photographer in order to submit?
A: No. Submissions are open for all who would like to apply.
Q: Why is there a submission fee & What is it used for?
A: The submission fee helps DFP to compensate the juror who will be going through all of the submissions and also enables DFP to put on this exhibition by helping fund a small portion of the costs associated with it.
Submission fee waivers are available on a case-by-case basis for photographers without access to credit cards or for whom the entry fee would be prohibitive. To be considered for the scholarship, please contact us at hello@dfpeducation.com
Q: I would like a submission review. How does it work?
A: Video Recorded Submission Reviews will be conducted by Jenna Shouldice and Ash Raddatz (together). You will receive an email with a link to access your submission review video(s).
Submission reviews are available for 10 euros for up to the 5 images that you have submitted on your submission form. Each exhibit submission form allows for 5 images but, If you would like to submit additional images to the exhibit, you can do so by simply submitting the additional images on a separate submission form. If you would like those additional images reviewed as well, you will need to pay an additional 10 euros for the submissions on that form, in which case, you will receive 2 submission reviews, one for form one’s images, and one for form two’s images, and so on.
For example, if you submit images 1-5 on a form, and select the add-on option for a submission review, you will pay the additional 10 euros for the review, and the video review will be for images 1-5. If you decide you would like to submit 3 more images and have those reviewed as well, you will fill out another submission form and submit images 6, 7, and 8. If you select the add-on option for a submission review on that second submission form, you will pay the additional 10 euros for the review of images 6,7, and 8.
Even if your work is not selected for the exhibit, you can still get a submission review and receive feedback on your work, so long as you selected the option upon submission of your images.
Submission reviews will be sent back to photographers by June 3, 2022.
Q: What happens if my work is selected for the exhibit?
A: Photographers will be notified that their work has been selected by May 17, 2022. At that time, we may request high-resolution files, a bio, and any other information we need in order to include your work in the exhibition.
Q: If one of my submitted images is featured on Instagram/Facebook, does that have an effect on it being selected for the exhibit?
A: No. DFP selects certain submissions to feature on our social media, but the images chosen to be included in the exhibit are chosen by our jurors/judges. DFP just likes to celebrate all of the good work this community does, and by featuring some submissions on social media, we are able to do so.
Q: If my work is selected, how can I get more exposure?
A: All photographers whose work is selected to be included in the exhibit will receive a press packet from DFP with ideas on how you can leverage your inclusion in the exhibit. This includes press release templates, email templates, badges to include on your website, and more. You will also want to be sure to invite people to view the exhibit and share about it on all of your social media and marketing channels.
In addition, DFP works hard to notify press as well.
Q: In your terms & conditions it mentions “irrevocable, royalty-free rights” for the exhibition catalogue and a possible book in the future. What’s up with that?
A: By submitting to the exhibition, if your work is selected, you grant DFP non-exclusive rights to exhibit your image, and to use it in materials relating to the exhibit, including the exhibition catalogue. Exhibition catalogues are customary and some exhibits/festivals/galleries/awards at some point do a best of book or yearbook of sorts.
If we do at some point plan to publish a book, it would be collaborative with the photographers and we would definitely let you all know ahead of time.
Q. I am nervous to submit. I am not sure if my work measures up.
A: We encourage you to submit for the experience. DFP is a safe place to submit images and to know, even if your work is not selected, we are still proud of you for stepping into the light and taking up space.
